SYNOPSIS A child of wealth in Beverly Hills begins to suspect his family and their social circle are partaking in bizarre, lethal, orgiastic behavior behind closed doors.
OPINION
Boy. Boy oh boy. Society isn't a great movie, its performances are undercooked, and its structure is baffling and limp. So why's it on this list? Because you've already seen Re-Animator, probably, and because this film has effects shots that they're never gonna let anybody make, ever, ever again. Nobody's doing their best work, except for Joji Tani, a.k.a. Screaming Mad George - the truest wizard of gore there is. Already known for his work on Big Trouble in Little China and A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 and 4, Society culminates in George's masterpiece - a room-scale effects orgy of flesh and fluid as the many become one. The film operates as a lesser version of the Stuart Gordon / Brian Yuzna classics, so watch those first - but save room for Society.
